What was your worst cooking experience?
Contrary to popular belief, not everything I have ever cooked has been ready for the pages of Martha Stewart Living Magazine. All great cooks have great disasters. Thankfully mine have never resulted in anyone's death.
I remember one time when I was about 9 years old, and I was checking on a roasted chicken. In my defense the rack in the oven had a serious slope. When I pulled it out to baste it, it fell out of the oven and onto the floor. I stood there stunned for a moment, figuring I was doomed.
I had no idea what to do and ran outside to tell my Mom. I figured she would be really livid. She wasn't happy, and told me that we would just wash it off. And that's what we did. She took me inside and she carefully washed the bird in the sink and put it back in the oven.
There was another time when I was 17 when I decided to clean out my Mom's closet. She had all these plastic bags and hangers from the dry cleaner. I thought it would only take a few minutes and became completely engrossed in what I was doing. Suddenly I remembered that I had put on a pot of water to boil for spaghetti.
I ran downstairs to find most of the water in the large pot just about gone, and black spots starting to form in the bottom. Thankfully I didn't set off the fire alarm or burn down the kitchen. I think I may have even managed to salvage the pot, and finish the closet before my Mom returned home.
