Should driving while talking on a cell phone be outlawed?
Submitted by Soup.

Yes, I do it should be outlawed. At least you should be required to use a headset or other device that makes talking hands free. I also think that more importantly when it is outlawed, people should be ticketed. I know that when they passed a ban in Chicago, it was kind of a joke as the law was rarely enforced. The local NPR affiliate set someone on Michigan Avenue and it was outrageous the number of people they saw talking on phones while driving.

I hate watching people backing out of a parking space with one hand on the wheel, the other on the phone. Or trying to make a left turn while one hand has the phone smacked up against their face. Usually when I pass a driver who is driving erratically, more often than not, that driver is using a cell phone. It is just really dumb. And even if you don't cause an accident, your driving skills are definitely diminished. You are causing other angst and anxiety, if nothing else.

I think if something is that important you should just pull off the road and park. When car phones were first introduced you needed to be parked and you had to use an operator to dial the call for you. I know that this was mostly done because of the lack of technology, but it was definitely more safe.

p.s. Texting while driving should just be outlawed period.

It is outlawed in the UK, you must use some form of handsfree device. You get an on the spot fine if you are caught.

Having said that – I see literally dozens of people a day using their phones while driving – my FIL does it all the time. I think it's awful – you literally cannot pay full attention to the road.

There's a 'crime' here called 'driving without due care and attention' – you get a fine and points on your licence, (once you get 12 points you are banned from driving). In my mind using your phone while driving should be classed as driving wihtout due care and attention.

It will be outlawed in California in July 2008. You must use a handsfree device after that date or be fined. There is now talk of adding to the law outlawing all talking and texting while driving for those 18 and under. Of course the issue there is how do you know who is of that exact age?
